From the 12th to 27th of February, the blend(er) gallery in Central Walk, Joondalup will be featuring the work of photographers Neil Wallace, Mark Coddington and Julian (jules) Tennant. Drawn together through a passion for travel and a desire to create beautiful images, the trio have put together an exhibition of diverse, yet striking photographs from across the globe.

Turista Photografik explores the relationship of imagery to appropriation. A photograph taken in a fraction of a second shapes the memory or perception of a place that may be both real and imagined.

Mark Coddington’s Yugoslavia is a far cry from the war torn region that we’ve come to know on the TV. Despite 11 years of sanctions, there is a freshness in the people and popular culture which provides an interesting visual counterpoint to our preconceived notions.

Neil Wallace’s images of Madagascar radiate the warm moody colours of a tropical idyll, yet exhibit a quirkiness that highlight the elements of contemporary Western culture bubbling up between the stick fences and carved log boats of the fishermen. His images depict two distinct ways of life in collision and juxtaposition.

Jules Tennant evades this comparison by largely avoiding any reference point to the late 20th century. His images hark back to an era of colonisation and exploration. Through his lens, contemporary South East Asia looks much the same as in the days of Siam
and French Indochina, depicting a world that is both a fantasy and reality.
